方解石 CaCO3 是礦物界的變形大師，湖北料的蜜色來自生長時進入晶格的鐵。它也是雙折射的經典教材——透過清澈部位看一條細線，那條線會一分為二。凡此種種都附帶警告：莫氏硬度 3，三個方向的完全菱面體解理，而且一遇酸就會失去光澤。請用乾棉花，並收在密閉的陳列櫃裡。
