一塊薄板，厚僅 1.3 cm，由邊到邊鋪滿螢石晶體，顏色自橄欖綠經煙灰過渡到角落的紫。沒有一個晶面是平滑的：每一顆晶體都以階梯方式堆疊而成，較新的生長層內顯露出更早的幻影輪廓。白色微晶點綴著縫隙，靠近上方還有一顆具光澤的黑色晶體破出表面。
幻影是名副其實的快照——一個曾經停滯的生長面，積聚了一層雜質薄膜，隨後被新的螢石掩埋——因此每一顆晶體內的鬼影，正是它早年所保有的輪廓。內蒙古螢石為人蒐藏的，正是這種綠紫相間的層理。螢石為 CaF2，莫氏硬度 4，具完全八面體解理；角上一記碰撞就會剝下一片三角形薄片，因此請放在不會有東西滾過來撞到的架位。
這塊板 7.6 × 1.3 × 6.6 cm、120 g——以其面積而言相當輕，最好直立擺放，讓光線斜掠過那些階梯。照片所示即為寄達時的模樣。
