關於此標本
這裡的功勞大半來自那一抹孔雀金的閃光。標本主體是一層緊密排列的小石英晶霜，陰影處呈灰紫色，受光處近乎白色；右上方一叢乳白色的塊狀方解石打破了這片質地，某些地方還有深色斑塊自石英下方透出。嵌在左上方石英中的，是一枚泛著金色與紫色虹彩的黃銅礦晶體，靠近下緣另有幾點更小的同類。
湖北的多金屬礦床經常像這樣把石英、方解石與銅鐵硫化物聚在一起，硫化物在先，碳酸鹽最後。黃銅礦的顏色來自一層薄薄的表面鏽膜，而非礦物本身的色調，一擦就會被抹去。方解石莫氏硬度 3，石英則為 7，因此清潔時請以現場最軟的礦物為準。
標本尺寸 3.8 × 2.3 × 3.8 cm，重 30 g，立於透明壓克力座上，後方以白色黏土支撐。這就是照片中的那件標本，連最後一枚晶體都分毫不差。
