一枚石英晶體，孤立而直挺地站在一塊赭黃色黏土板上，獨自撐起這件蘭汶標本的全部看點。晶端明亮、晶面銳利，透光之處清澈如玻璃；再往下，柱身逐漸轉暗，內部充滿深色的包裹體雲霧與鏽色薄膜，而晶體當年長入礦脈裂隙之處，至今仍沾附著同一種黃色黏土的粉末。
石英屬三方晶系，莫氏硬度 7，堅韌到足以在周遭一切崩解之後依然完好——這正是為什麼在像這樣充填黏土的晶洞裡，晶體能完整取出，而母岩早已碎成泥漿。晶體內部的深色薄紗是生長過程中被捲入的礦物質，記錄了當時流體中懸浮著什麼。這件標本脆弱的一半是鬆軟的母岩：請保持乾燥，切勿刷洗。
