關於此標本
藍晶石的板狀晶體堆滿這塊巴西標本的整個高度，緣接著緣，宛如一本泡發膨脹的書頁。有些呈現收藏者追求的那種平實矢車菊藍；有些則因石英與細粒雲母擠入其間而褪為鉛灰與銀灰；另有幾片映光時泛出藍晶石沿解理面特有的珍珠光澤。背面粗糙未經修整，顯然板狀晶面那一側才是展示面。
藍晶石的化學式為 Al2SiO5，形成於變質岩的高壓環境，最著名的特徵是硬度隨方向而異：沿晶板長軸約為 4.5 至 5，橫向則達 6.5 至 7。鋼針從一個方向可以刻劃它，換個方向卻會滑開。這項特性為它贏得「二硬石」（disthene）這個舊名，意即兩種強度；在有人想用硬工具清理晶板之前，值得先記住這一點。
就其佔地面積而言分量十足，10.4 × 6.1 × 5.1 cm、460 g。不附底座。照片中的標本就是實際出貨的那一件。
