關於此標本
一根長粗了、又被盛裝打扮過的洞穴石管：這件雲南標本的核心是一支鐘乳狀方解石柱，而它的每一寸表面都披覆著逐漸收尖的短小琥珀橙色晶體。較大的晶體之間，坐落著同種礦物的鏽色微晶簇，細如地衣；錐體底部則在溫暖的鐵染色褪盡之處，轉為淡黃綠色的方解石。
鐘乳狀方解石起始於洞穴空隙中滴落的富碳酸鹽水，一層一層地築起一根中空的管；要到更晚，第二代晶體才會在這根管外向外生長，而這正是本件標本呈現出那種芒刺般錐形輪廓的原因。方解石的化學式為 CaCO3，莫氏硬度 3，具完美的菱面體解理，即使遇上弱酸也會溶解——只可乾撢除塵，切勿使用食醋。
標本高 5.2 cm，底面 4.1 × 2.9 cm，重 126 g，直立展示於透明壓克力底座上，並以白色黏土固定。相機記錄下的，就是將送達您手中的那一件。
