قاعدة هذه العيّنة الهندية قشرة من البيريت النحاسي اللون اكتسبت أسطحها تشويهًا لونيًّا يشبه بقعة الزيت، يتدرّج الذهبي فيه إلى الأخضر والبرونزي بحسب الزاوية التي تمسكها بها. ومن ذلك الفراش تنمو بلورات كوارتز عديمة اللون: قمّتان طويلتان جيّدتا التشكّل تمتدّان إلى الأعلى والخلف، وقبّة زجاجية منخفضة بينهما، وعناقيد من الإبر الأدقّ تتشعّع من الجانبين.
قوس القزح على البيريت (FeS2) ليس شيئًا وضعه أحد. إنه غشاء أكسدة بالغ الرقّة على أوجه البلورات، يفرّق الضوء الأبيض تمامًا كما تفعل فقاعة الصابون. وذلك الغشاء هو الجزء الهشّ من العيّنة: فالمسح أو التلميع أو التنظيف بالماء يزيله فورًا. أبقِ القطعة جافّة واستخدم فرشاة ناعمة فقط. أما الكوارتز، بصلادة 7 على مقياس موس، فلا يطلب شيئًا.
تبلغ أبعادها 6.9 × 4.9 × 3.4 سم ووزنها 105 غ، وتُعرض على حامل الأكريليك الشفاف المصوَّر. والصور كلّها تُظهر هذه القطعة الواحدة، لا نموذجًا تمثيليًّا.
