Stahlgrau und fettig glänzend, kantig wie Maschinenteile: Die Bournonit-Kristalle dieses kleinen chinesischen Stücks sind gedrungen statt tafelig. Der größte krönt die Stufe mit einer breiten ebenen Fläche, deren Kanten in feine parallele Stufen aufbrechen – jene Zahnradkerbung, für die die Art bekannt ist. Darunter und rechts davon stehen hellere Kristalle borstig aus einer weißen, mit messingfarbenem Sulfid gesprenkelten Matrix.
Bournonit ist PbCuSbS3, ein Blei-Kupfer-Antimon-Sulfid, und seine Neigung, immer wieder auf derselben Ebene zu verzwillingen, erzeugt jene Zahnradumrisse; jede Kerbe entlang einer Kante ist eine Zwillingslamelle im Stapel. Mit Mohs 2,5 bis 3 ist das Mineral weich und nimmt leicht Druckstellen an, und häufiges Anfassen legt einen stumpfen Film über den Glanz – halten Sie dieses Stück deshalb an der Matrix.
Ein daumengroßes Stück, 4,3 × 3,0 × 3,0 cm und 85 g – für seine Größe spürbar schwer, wie es Bleiminerale sind. Es kommt ohne Ständer. Dies ist die Kristallgruppe der Fotos, bis zur letzten gekerbten Kante.
