Ein Kristall trägt dieses Stück: ein steiles pfirsichrosa Skalenoeder aus Calcit, durchscheinend genug, um Licht durch seine Flächen zu lassen, das schräg aus einem Keil tongrauer Matrix ragt. Dicht dahinter drängt sich eine kurze Reihe kleinerer Kristalle mit demselben Hundszahn-Profil, und durch das Innere der Hauptspitze zieht ein blasser rostiger Hauch.
Calcit (CaCO3) tritt in mehr Kristallformen auf als jedes andere Mineral, und das Skalenoeder – der klassische Hundszahn – ist die Form, die Sammler sofort erkennen. Das Erzfeld von Daye in Hubei liefert blasse, warmtonige Beispiele genau dieses Zuschnitts, wobei die Farbe von Spurenelementen stammt und nicht von einer Behandlung. Bei Mohshärte 3 und vollkommener Spaltbarkeit nach drei Richtungen verlangt Calcit ein weiches Tuch und keine Stöße; halten Sie alles Säurehaltige fern, denn schon schwache Säure nimmt diesen Flächen den Glanz.
