Über diese Stufe
Flaschengrüner Epidot bildet den Körper dieser kleinen Stufe aus Sichuan und dunkelt fast zu Schwarz, wo er dicker wird; darüber liegt eine Streuung farbloser Quarzspitzen – kurz, scharf ausgebildet und das Licht fangend wie Reif auf Moos. Einige der Quarzpartien tragen einen warmen hellbraunen Ton, wo Eisen sie verfärbt hat.
Stücke wie dieses werden oft als Gartenquarz verkauft, in der Vorstellung, das Grün wachse durch den klaren Kristall hindurch. Hier verhält es sich umgekehrt, und das sei deutlich gesagt: Der Epidot ist die Matrix, eine Kruste, auf und zwischen der der Quarz gewachsen ist, und keine Fahne, die in einem einzelnen Kristall eingeschlossen wäre. Epidot ist ein eisenhaltiges Calcium-Aluminium-Silikat, und dieses Eisen treibt die Farbe von Pistazie in Richtung Schwarz. Beide Minerale sind hart – Quarz 7, Epidot 6 bis 7 –, sodass das Stück Handhabung gut verträgt.
