Über diese Stufe
Kreideweiße Loben überlappen sich über der Schauseite dieses kleinen Gipses, jede von feinen konzentrischen Rippen gefältelt und in den Vertiefungen mit rostorangem Eisenoxid bestäubt. Der Umriss ist eine abgeflachte Rosette von der Größe einer Walnuss, matt und undurchsichtig, wo Gips sonst glasig auftritt: Es findet sich nicht eine einzige Kristallfläche daran, nur Anwachsung auf Anwachsung.
Gips ist CaSO4·2H2O und steht bei Mohs 2 – ein Fingernagel ritzt ihn, und ein feuchtes Tuch richtet Schlimmeres an, denn Gips ist schwach löslich und wird beim Waschen stumpf. Die Popcorn-Tracht entsteht durch langsamen Aufbau aus dünnen Filmen mineralhaltigen Wassers und nicht durch freies Wachstum in einen offenen Hohlraum – deshalb besteht die Oberfläche aus gerundeten Schalen statt aus Ebenen.
