Über diese Stufe
Eine ganze Platte, gepflastert mit rauchgrauem Calcit, und fast jeder Kristall darauf trägt eine Kruste aus schwarzem Hämatit, die wie zerstoßene Kohle glitzert. Zwischen den dunklen Partien dünnt dieser Überzug zu Ziegelrot und Lachsrosa aus, während der Calcit darunter je nach Stärke der Überwachsung von nahezu farblos bis Gewittergrau wechselt. Mit 14 cm Breite füllt die Platte eine Hand.
Beide Farben gehören demselben Mineral. Hämatit, Fe2O3, kristallisiert als schwarze metallische Täfelchen; zu Staub zerrieben oder als dünner Überzug ist er jedoch ockerrot – deshalb hinterlässt jeder Hämatit einen rotbraunen Strich, so schwarz er auch aussehen mag. Der tragende Calcit hat Mohs 3 und spaltet nach drei Richtungen; stützen Sie die Platte daher von unten, statt sie an den Kristallspitzen zu greifen.
Mit 14,0 × 11,4 × 5,1 cm bei 785 g wird sie lose präsentiert, ohne Sockel. Auf allen Fotos ist genau diese Platte zu sehen.
