Reif auf Rost: Haarfeine Gipsnadeln stehen in zwei dichten Pompons von einer dunkel schokoladenbraunen Kruste ab, dazwischen ergießt sich ein lockereres Büschel. Die Nadeln sind farblos und glasig, wo sie das Licht fangen, und nehmen einen warmen Bernsteinton an, wo sie flach auf der Matrix liegen; die ganze Oberfläche glitzert bei der kleinsten Neigung der Hand.
Gips (CaSO4·2H2O) gehört zu den weichsten Mineralen, die ein Sammler je besitzen wird – Mohshärte 2, mit dem Fingernagel ritzbar –, und nadelige Büschel wie diese sind seine zerbrechlichste Erscheinungsform. Sie wuchsen in offene Hohlräume hinein, wasserdünne Kristalle, die von einem gemeinsamen Punkt ausstrahlten, bis sie auf Gestein trafen. Halten Sie das Stück trocken, denn Gips ist leicht löslich, und entfernen Sie Staub mit einem Luftstoß oder einem sehr weichen Pinsel statt mit einem Tuch, das die Nadeln dutzendweise abbricht.
