Sobre este espécimen
Visto a un brazo de distancia, parece que alguien hubiera trazado metal hilado sobre la roca. Acérquese y la bruma se resuelve en miles de agujas de bismutinita —plateadas, finas como un cabello, algunas de más de un centímetro— enmarañadas y entretejidas sobre una matriz gris negruzca. Pequeños cristales de cuarzo incoloro empujan hacia arriba a través del fieltro en nudos vítreos, y costras pálidas de carbonato asoman a lo largo del borde inferior, donde la cobertura de agujas se adelgaza.
La bismutinita es sulfuro de bismuto, Bi2S3, ortorrómbico, y con dureza 2 en la escala de Mohs es más blanda que una uña. En este hábito acicular esa blandura lo es todo para el coleccionista: las agujas se doblan o se cizallan bajo un cepillo, la yema de un dedo o un embalaje descuidado, y no vuelven a crecer. Expóngala bajo una campana o en una vitrina cerrada, muévala sujetándola por la matriz y no la desempolve nunca.
La pieza mide 9,1 × 4,3 × 6,4 cm y pesa 221 g, con forma de cuña y estable sobre su ancha base. Estas fotografías documentan el ejemplar exacto que aquí se ofrece.
