Hunan red-fluorescing sugar calcite with chalcopyrite at 49 g; a small cabinet piece for the UV collector.
Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.
Chalcopyrite is the main ore of copper, forming brassy tetrahedral crystals that tarnish to iridescent blues and purples.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 5.5 × 3.6 × 2.5 cm (2.17 × 1.42 × 0.98 in) and 49 g (1.7 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
