Sobre este espécimen
La calcita pálida, casi incolora, se agolpa en la cara frontal de esta placa de Daye, vítrea y translúcida, con varios cristales que llevan un núcleo gris ahumado y un velo de manchas de óxido allí donde el crecimiento se ensució durante un tiempo. Se asientan sobre una costra negra hollinada y recorrida por vetas de óxido, y el encuentro de ambas superficies —cristal de aspecto húmedo contra carbón mate— es todo el argumento del ejemplar.
La calcita, CaCO3, tiene dureza 3 en la escala de Mohs y se separa según tres direcciones de exfoliación perfectas; un cristal que cae, más que desportillarse, se deshace en romboedros, de modo que esta es una pieza que conviene levantar por su base oscura. La ficha registra barita en asociación; lo que la cámara recoge con claridad es la calcita, con caras lo bastante brillantes como para devolver reflejos al objetivo. El vinagre y los ácidos domésticos atacan el carbonato al contacto: manténgalos bien lejos.
Unos cómodos 6,0 × 5,0 × 4,0 cm y 120 g, sin montura, fotografiada en la mano para que la translucidez se aprecie contra la matriz oscura. Este es el ejemplar concreto que se ofrece, no una muestra representativa.
