Sobre este espécimen
Una dispersión de granates rojo vino sobre feldespato crema fracturado: esa es toda la composición, y funciona. Pocos de los granates superan el tamaño de un grano de arroz y, sin embargo, cada uno es un dodecaedro nítido de caras vítreas, y el mayor se oscurece casi hasta el negro en el centro. Entre ellos se alzan cristales macizos de feldespato y varias puntas de cuarzo ahumado, una de ellas tan transparente que deja ver la matriz al otro lado.
El granate es un grupo más que un mineral único: varias especies comparten una misma estructura intercambiando los metales que alberga, y por eso el color del granate va desde este vino profundo hasta el naranja y el verde. La compañía que mantiene aquí es la típica de una cavidad granítica: feldespato, cuarzo y un granate que sobrevive a ambos. Con 6,5 a 7,5 en la escala de Mohs es lo más duro de la pieza, y el ejemplar en conjunto es lo bastante robusto como para manipularlo sin reparos.
