Sobre este espécimen
Lóbulos blanco tiza se superponen por la cara de este pequeño yeso, cada uno arrugado con finas crestas concéntricas y espolvoreado en los huecos con óxido de hierro anaranjado. El contorno es una roseta achatada del tamaño de una nuez, mate y opaca allí donde la mayoría de los yesos son vítreos: no hay una sola cara cristalina que encontrar en ella, solo acreción amontonada sobre acreción.
El yeso es CaSO4·2H2O y se sitúa en el 2 de la escala de Mohs: una uña lo raya, y un paño húmedo hace algo peor, ya que el yeso es levemente soluble y pierde el brillo si se lava. El hábito «popcorn» procede de una acumulación lenta a partir de películas delgadas de agua cargada de minerales, y no de un crecimiento libre en una cavidad abierta, y por eso la superficie está hecha de conchas redondeadas en lugar de planos.
