Sobre este espécimen
La miel recorre los bordes superiores de esta calcita de Daye y se difumina en humo a medida que desciende por el cristal. El cuerpo es un único romboedro macizo, lo bastante transparente como para leer a través de él la sombra de una yema de dedo, con una amplia cara superior finamente grabada por un entramado de líneas de crecimiento. Uno de los bordes frontales ha quedado brillante y vidrioso: un estrecho bisel natural, sin trabajo de lapidario, que recorre todo el ancho del cristal.
El distrito de Daye, en Hubei, es tierra de hierro y cobre, y sus calcitas suelen salir muy parecidas a esta: tonos cálidos teñidos de hierro sobre cristal transparente, geometría nítida y una superficie que conserva en forma de estrías el registro de su propio crecimiento. Químicamente es CaCO3, trigonal, con dureza 3 en la escala de Mohs. La exfoliación romboédrica corre paralela a esos bordes brillantes, de modo que un golpe en el sitio equivocado arranca una lámina y no una simple esquirla.
Con 3,8 × 3,0 × 3,0 cm y 45 g, es una miniatura con verdadera presencia, todavía adherida a la matriz de color pardo rojizo oscuro sobre la que creció, y se entrega sin soporte. Cada una de las imágenes procede de este mismo cristal.
