Sobre este espécimen
Un solo cristal sostiene esta miniatura. Un cuarzo achaparrado y transparente como el agua yace casi plano sobre una matriz brechificada color canela, tan ancho por el centro que sus caras terminales se leen como placas amplias más que como puntas. Su interior está surcado por películas plumosas pálidas y una dispersión de motas oscuras, y una segunda punta, mucho más pequeña, sale de la roca por debajo. La roca encajante es un revoltijo de fragmentos angulosos y claros, cementados en pardo y surcados por vetas blancas y crema.
Esas películas plumosas son fracturas cicatrizadas: roturas que se abrieron mientras el cuarzo todavía crecía y que fueron reselladas por sílice fresca, dejando una fina piel de fluido atrapado que marca la superficie antigua. Son historia estructural y no daño, y dan a un cristal transparente como este algo con lo que retener la mirada bajo una lámpara. El cuarzo tiene dureza 7 en la escala de Mohs y carece de exfoliación, así que el cristal es robusto; la matriz es la mitad más blanda.
El ejemplar mide 4,1 × 3,0 × 3,3 cm y pesa 30 g. Viene sobre el cubo de acrílico transparente que se muestra, sujeto con masilla removible, y el cristal fotografiado es el cristal que se suministra.
