Sobre este espécimen
Aquí todo el peso recae en un único cristal: una calcita rosa pálido, del color del interior de una concha, sin matriz ni minerales acompañantes con los que repartir el interés. La forma es compleja: una docena de caras que se encuentran en ángulos suaves, algunas de brillo especular y otras veladas por planos de crecimiento internos que se leen como finas estrías paralelas en lo hondo de la piedra.
La calcita (CaCO3) es trigonal y solo alcanza 3 en la escala de Mohs, con exfoliación romboédrica perfecta en tres direcciones: un golpe en una arista arranca una lámina, no una esquirla. Hubei lleva años produciendo calcitas rosadas; el tinte procede de trazas de manganeso en la red, y el manganeso es también lo que hace que muchas calcitas respondan a la luz ultravioleta, aunque la intensidad varía de un cristal a otro. Coloque un borde recto detrás y la imagen desdoblada delatará la célebre y marcada birrefringencia de la calcita.
3,8 × 2,5 × 2,5 cm y 45 g, asentado en masilla gris blanquecina sobre el soporte de acrílico transparente que se ve aquí. Las fotografías muestran este mismo cristal.
