Sobre este espécimen
Un solo destello de dorado pavo real hace aquí casi todo el trabajo. El cuerpo de la pieza es una drusa apretada de pequeños cristales de cuarzo lechoso, gris lavanda en la sombra y casi blanco allí donde los alcanza la luz; arriba a la derecha, un abanico de calcita maciza color crema rompe la textura, y en algunos puntos asoman manchas oscuras a través del cuarzo. Incrustado en el cuarzo, arriba a la izquierda, hay un único cristal de calcopirita con iridiscencia dorada y violeta, con unas pocas motas más pequeñas del mismo mineral junto al borde inferior.
Los yacimientos polimetálicos de Hubei reúnen habitualmente cuarzo, calcita y sulfuros de cobre y hierro de esta manera, con los sulfuros primero y el carbonato al final. Los colores de la calcopirita son una fina película superficial de pátina y no el tono propio del mineral, y frotarla los eliminará. La calcita tiene dureza 3 en la escala de Mohs frente al 7 del cuarzo, así que limpie con la delicadeza que exija lo más blando que haya presente.
Mide 3,8 × 2,3 × 3,8 cm y pesa 30 g, y se muestra de pie sobre un bloque de acrílico transparente con masilla blanca detrás. Este es el ejemplar de las fotografías, hasta el último cristal.
