Shangbao, Hunan, green quartz with pyrite at 7.5 cm and 180 g; a small cabinet piece. Keep dry. A block of pale green-tinted quartz with brassy pyrite cubes set into its upper face, the largest cube bright and sharp at the centre and smaller pyrite scattered below.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Pyrite is the most collected metallic mineral, and the best pieces combine sharp form with a lustre that has not dulled; store it dry to keep it that way.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
By size it is small cabinet, 7.5 × 5.4 × 4.5 cm (2.95 × 2.13 × 1.77 in) and 180 g (6.3 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
