Un nodulo bianco a forma di uovo d’oca, aperto lungo un fianco per mostrare ciò che nascondeva all’interno. La crosta esterna è di quarzo traslucido e bitorzoluto, metà zucchero e metà vetro, che si richiude in alto come un cappuccio; la cavità che protegge vira a un profondo ambra-caramello, con la stessa tessitura botrioidale ripetuta in bruno caldo là dove il bianco è stato asportato. Il contrasto fra i due è tutto il senso del pezzo.
Agata e calcedonio sono silice microcristallina, SiO2, depositata strato su strato mentre un fluido ricco di silice penetra in una cavità e la riveste dalle pareti verso l’interno. Il ferro raccolto lungo il percorso è la solita origine di toni ambrati e bruni come questi. Con durezza Mohs 6,5–7 rientra fra le cose più resistenti che si possano tenere in vetrina: nessuna sfaldatura e durezza sufficiente a ignorare i graffi accidentali.
4,6 × 3,8 × 3,8 cm per 85 g, fissato con pasta adesiva sul cubetto di acrilico trasparente illustrato. Le immagini provengono unicamente da questo esemplare.
