Tenuto controluce questo teschio diventa quasi traslucido: un calcedonio caldo, dal crema al miele, che lascia viaggiare la luce per diversi millimetri dentro la calotta prima che si spenga. La lucidatura è tanto spinta da gettare riflessi duri lungo la fronte e sullo zigomo, e i denti sono incisi in due file regolari, ciascuno squadrato da un taglio verticale poco profondo. Lungo la tempia sinistra lo scultore ha incontrato una stretta cavità di cristalli grigi drusiformi e l'ha lasciata aperta e non lucidata.
Quella cavità è la parte interessante. L'agata si forma quando la silice riempie una cavità dalle pareti verso il centro, e quando l'apporto si esaurisce prima che il centro si chiuda, l'ultimo spazio resta vuoto e vi cristallizza la drusa. Ricavare un teschio da un nodulo simile è una scommessa: il vuoto non si vede finché la superficie non lo intercetta, e il punto in cui capita decide l'intero pezzo.
