È il blu a fare il lavoro. Una crosta di minuti cristalli tozzi di azzurrite si stende sul terzo superiore di questo pezzo di matrice, si fa quasi nera dove sprofonda nell'ombra e si accende in un oltremare duro ovunque una faccia di cristallo si volti verso la luce. Sotto, la roccia ospite è grigia e beige, venata di macchie arancio ruggine.
L'azzurrite è un carbonato secondario di rame, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, che si forma dove l'acqua sotterranea ossigenata demolisce i solfuri di rame primari: ecco perché compare come patine e croste sul minerale alterato anziché in profondità nella roccia fresca. È tenera, 3,5-4 Mohs, e con un'esposizione molto prolungata può alterarsi verso la malachite, perciò la tenga lontana dalla luce solare diretta continuativa e dal calore secco.
Le dimensioni sono 4,3 cm × 3,8 cm × 2,8 cm per 25 g, il pezzo è posato su mastice bianco su un blocchetto di acrilico trasparente per le fotografie. Quelle fotografie documentano questo singolo pezzo, crosta blu compresa.
