Di profilo questo teschio si legge tanto come geode quanto come ritratto. Il quarzo è bianco latte e di grana zuccherina, ogni superficie incrostata di terminazioni microscopiche che disperdono la luce invece di rifletterla, mentre ombre grigio carbone scivolano sotto la calotta e la tempia: nuvole minerali più scure sigillate dentro la pietra molto prima che qualcuno la toccasse. Il lavoro di intaglio è volutamente misurato: un'orbita scavata, un ponte nasale, una fila di denti a blocchi, e poi il materiale è lasciato essere se stesso.
Il quarzo (SiO2) è trigonale e ha durezza Mohs 7, tanto duro che una superficie cristallizzata sopravvive alla sagomatura invece di arrotondarsi sotto la mola. Intagliare un blocco foderato di cavità è una scommessa di tipo particolare: il volto va trovato attorno al vuoto che la pietra già contiene, e qui la drusa è stata conservata anziché spianata, cosicché il pezzo finito tiene insieme un profilo e una cavità.
Il teschio misura 7,6 × 4,8 × 6,1 cm e si regge da solo. È stato fotografato su una superficie nera riflettente e senza supporto; il pezzo che vede in queste immagini è quello che viene spedito.
