L’intagliatore ha lasciato in pace la parte migliore della roccia. Il dorso dell’elefante si apre in una cavità mai toccata, dove centinaia di cristalli di un rosso granato scuro poggiano su un letto di drusa grigia e brillano come ghiaia bagnata; il resto dell’animale — orecchio a tratteggio incrociato, proboscide ripiegata, zampe massicce — è ricavato dalla pietra ospite grigia, con vene color ruggine che corrono sul fianco e l’occhio intarsiato con una pietra scura levigata.
Il granato cristallizza nel sistema cubico, non ha sfaldatura e si colloca fra 6,5 e 7,5 della scala Mohs: ecco perché i cristalli custoditi in una cavità riparata come questa conservano spigoli tanto netti e facce tanto brillanti. Costruire una figura attorno a una cavità viva è un problema più arduo che modellare una statuetta piena: è la cavità a decidere dove può andare l’animale, e qui è diventata l’howdah sul dorso dell’elefante.
Il pezzo misura 11,4 × 8,6 × 6,9 cm e pesa 860 g, un oggetto da due mani con un piede piatto che non richiede supporto. Quanto vede in fotografia è soltanto questa scultura, non un campione rappresentativo.
