About this specimen
Fujian wine-red garnet with quartz at 9.7 cm and 391 g; a cabinet plate. A broad plate of pale quartz and feldspar with wine-red garnet crystals scattered across it, glassy and sharply faced, with dark mica flakes between.
Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Fujian is China's most productive fluorite province, and its granite-hosted veins also yield the garnet, quartz and calcite that fill modern collections.
The piece is cabinet in size, 9.7 × 9 × 4 cm (3.82 × 3.54 × 1.57 in) and 391 g (13.8 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
