About this specimen
Yunxiao, Fujian, garnet with quartz at 6.2 cm; a small cabinet plate. A pale matrix plate scattered with small dark red garnets, smoky quartz points rising between them and rusty iron staining spreading through the rock around each crystal.
Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Yunxiao County in southern Fujian is a modern classic for orange spessartine garnet on smoky quartz and feldspar, mined from granite pegmatite pockets.
Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 6.2 × 4.8 × 1.7 cm (2.44 × 1.89 × 0.67 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
