About this specimen
Handan, Hebei, andradite garnet at 1.4 cm; a thumbnail single crystal, supplied in the display box shown. An andradite garnet dodecahedron in amber to dark brown, translucent along the thinner edges so light passes through where the crystal narrows.
Chinese garnet localities in Fujian and Inner Mongolia produce crisp, lustrous dodecahedra on feldspar and quartz.
Andradite garnet from the Chinese skarn deposits forms lustrous brown dodecahedra whose faces often carry a fine growth striation.
The skarn iron deposits around Handan in southern Hebei produce sharp andradite garnet dodecahedra, magnetite and calcite.
The piece is thumbnail in size, 1.4 × 1.4 × 1.2 cm (0.55 × 0.55 × 0.47 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
