About this specimen
Handan, Hebei, andradite garnet with epidote at 1.7 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Epidote blades in olive green stand up in a fan from a brown garnet base, the blades striated along their length and set close enough to read as a single opened fan.
Chinese garnet localities in Fujian and Inner Mongolia produce crisp, lustrous dodecahedra on feldspar and quartz.
Epidote's deep pistachio to olive green and striated prism faces separate it from prehnite. Andradite garnet from the Chinese skarn deposits forms lustrous brown dodecahedra whose faces often carry a fine growth striation.
The skarn iron deposits around Handan in southern Hebei produce sharp andradite garnet dodecahedra, magnetite and calcite.
The piece is thumbnail in size, 1.7 × 1 × 1 cm (0.67 × 0.39 × 0.39 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
