About this specimen
Yunxiao, Fujian, wine-red garnet with smoky quartz and feldspar at 40 g; a small cabinet piece with dense garnet coverage.
Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals.
The smoky colour is natural and usually deepens toward the terminations while the prism bases stay clearer. Feldspar forms the blocky, pale crystals that act as a stage for the more colourful minerals in a pegmatite pocket.
Fujian is China's most productive fluorite province, and its granite-hosted veins also yield the garnet, quartz and calcite that fill modern collections.
The piece is small cabinet in size, 5.2 × 4.1 × 2.1 cm (2.05 × 1.61 × 0.83 in) and 40 g (1.4 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
