About this specimen
Olive-green garnets stud a slab of charcoal-grey rock, the largest crowding the right edge in a loose knot while singles trail off across the face. Each is a sharp dodecahedron, glassy wherever light strikes a facet, with a few dark blue-green blades and small colourless crystals for company. The slab is rimmed in ochre where the rock weathered.
Andradite from Guangxi comes out of contact-metamorphosed skarn, where circulating fluids rebuilt limestone into a calcium-iron silicate. That iron is what pushes the colour toward olive and grass green. At Mohs 6.5–7.5 with no cleavage, garnet is among the tougher species on a shelf; here it is the friable dark matrix, not the crystals, that wants careful handling.
The plate runs 11.4 × 2.8 × 7.1 cm and weighs 195 g, thin enough to lean upright in a case. Every photograph on this page was taken of this plate itself.
