About this specimen
Handan, Hebei, andradite garnet at 1.7 cm; a thumbnail single crystal, supplied in the display box shown. An andradite garnet dodecahedron in orange-brown with a rough, earthy surface, the twelve faces still readable under the weathered skin.
Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals.
Andradite is the calcium-iron end of the garnet group; it grows as sharp dodecahedra and trapezohedra in skarns, usually honey-brown to black, and the green variety is called demantoid.
The skarn iron deposits around Handan in southern Hebei produce sharp andradite garnet dodecahedra, magnetite and calcite.
Dimensions place it in the thumbnail range, 1.7 × 1.3 × 1.3 cm (0.67 × 0.51 × 0.51 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
