About this specimen

Handan, Hebei, andradite garnet with epidote at 2.9 cm; a miniature, supplied in the display box shown. Brown andradite garnet dodecahedra sit along the top of the piece with olive-green epidote blades fanning out beside them, the two species grown side by side on the same matrix.

Chinese garnet localities in Fujian and Inner Mongolia produce crisp, lustrous dodecahedra on feldspar and quartz.

Epidote's deep pistachio to olive green and striated prism faces separate it from prehnite. Andradite is the calcium-iron end of the garnet group; it grows as sharp dodecahedra and trapezohedra in skarns, usually honey-brown to black, and the green variety is called demantoid.

The skarn iron deposits around Handan in southern Hebei produce sharp andradite garnet dodecahedra, magnetite and calcite.

Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 2.9 × 2.8 × 1.9 cm (1.14 × 1.10 × 0.75 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
