About this specimen
Handan, Hebei, andradite garnet at 1.2 cm; a thumbnail single crystal, supplied in the display box shown. A single andradite garnet in reddish brown, its dodecahedral faces meeting cleanly all round the crystal with a resinous shine and fine growth lines across each face.
Chinese garnet localities in Fujian and Inner Mongolia produce crisp, lustrous dodecahedra on feldspar and quartz.
Andradite garnet from the Chinese skarn deposits forms lustrous brown dodecahedra whose faces often carry a fine growth striation.
The skarn iron deposits around Handan in southern Hebei produce sharp andradite garnet dodecahedra, magnetite and calcite.
The piece is thumbnail in size, 1.2 × 1 × 1 cm (0.47 × 0.39 × 0.39 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
