Guardi da vicino e l’oro qui non è affatto una spruzzata di cubi: è una drusa di cristalli di pirite grandi appena più di granelli di zucchero, distesa su un letto di dolomite bianco-crema dalle forme arrotondate. Il rivestimento segue ogni sporgenza e ogni incavo del carbonato sottostante, così la placca scintilla in un tono ottone-oliva che cambia al minimo movimento, mentre una manciata di cristalli di dolomite nudi emerge dalla crosta come ciottoli chiari.
Una drusa di pirite così fine si forma tardi, quando fluidi ricchi di solfuri in raffreddamento scorrono su un carbonato già cristallizzato: ecco perché la pirite ricalca con tanta fedeltà la superficie della dolomite. La pirite è FeS2, da 6 a 6,5 Mohs, dura ma chimicamente inquieta: la conservi in un luogo asciutto e lontano da ovatta umida, perché è l’umidità a innescare il degrado dei solfuri.
La placca misura 4,1 × 1,8 × 2,8 cm e pesa 25 g, mostrata su un blocchetto di acrilico trasparente con pasta adesiva bianca. Ogni scatto di questa scheda riguarda questa placca e nessun’altra.
