Crosta bianco neve, roccia ospite grigio scura e una spruzzata di pirite ottonata sui due terzi superiori: questa placca di Tonglushan lavora interamente sul contrasto. I cristalli di pirite sono distinti e squadrati, di qualche millimetro ciascuno, posati sopra il rivestimento di calcite anziché cresciuti attraverso di esso, e la loro patina oro-oliva li mantiene sobri invece che lucenti come specchi. Al centro a destra un piccolo ventaglio di calcite lamellare bianca interrompe la crosta, e lungo il bordo destro affiora la roccia scura nuda.
Tonglushan, a Daye nello Hubei, è uno skarn a rame e ferro, e la pirite sparsa su una coltre tardiva di calcite è uno dei suoi aspetti caratteristici. La pirite è FeS2 con durezza da 6 a 6,5 Mohs, mentre la calcite attorno si ferma a 3 Mohs: la crosta è dunque la parte vulnerabile. Tenga la placca all’asciutto, perché è la conservazione in ambiente umido a degradare col tempo i solfuri.
La placca misura 8,9 × 1,8 × 5,6 cm e pesa 79 g, abbastanza sottile da stare distesa in un cassetto e mostrata qui in mano, senza supporto. L’esemplare di queste fotografie è quello che le verrà imballato.
