Un cristallo largo, a lama, si erge al centro di questo esemplare della Mongolia Interna, lattiginoso e appena verdastro dove la luce lo attraversa, e dalla sua metà inferiore uno spruzzo di sottili prismi bianchi si apre a ventaglio come una manciata di aghi lasciata cadere. Minuti granuli neri sono sparsi su quasi ogni faccia, a decine, e la base si scurisce in una matrice ruvida macchiata di arancione ruggine.
Quarzo e calcite insieme sono la firma delle cavità in rocce carbonatiche della regione, e l'abbinamento è utile da possedere: fianco a fianco in un solo esemplare da mano può confrontare un minerale di durezza 7 Mohs con uno di durezza 3. Si regoli sul più tenero dei due (un pennello morbido, mai acidi, mai vasca a ultrasuoni) e sostenga il pezzo da sotto quando lo sposta, perché i prismi sottili si spezzano con facilità.
Le dimensioni sono 6,0 × 4,6 × 7,2 cm per un peso di 140 g, e l'esemplare è fissato con mastice sulla base in acrilico trasparente illustrata. Qui nulla è una foto d'archivio: questo è il pezzo stesso.
