この標本について
淡い水色。鉱物の標本棚ではそう頻繁には見かけない色合いです。細かな青い結晶が上を向いて集まった丸い半球が、この雲南省産サムネイルの正面をほぼ覆っています。表面はビロードのようで、結晶の先端が輪郭を破るあたりはうっすらと毛羽立って見えます。その下と背後の母岩は灰白色のぶどう状で、左の肩には黒い酸化物が帯となって固まり、淡い岩肌には青がにじんで流れ落ちています。
方ソーダ石は通常、塊状の青い岩として産し、板に切られたりビーズに磨かれたりして目にするものです。その青が、放射状で繊維質の組織を持つ結晶のロゼットとして現れるこの標本は、まったく性格の異なるものといえます。白亜質の表面は指の脂を吸いやすく、一度付くと簡単には落ちません。取り扱うときは灰色の母岩をつかみ、湿気を避けて保管してください。
