Yunnan pyrite-dusted iron concretion at 9.8 cm and 851 g; a cabinet sphere. Keep dry. A large natural sphere of dark iron concretion with a dense speckling of brassy pyrite grains over the whole surface, denser than usual so the ball glitters all round.
Pyrite grows as cubes, pyritohedra and octahedra with a brassy metallic lustre; Chinese pyrite is known for sharp, mirror-faced crystals.
Iron concretions are rounded iron-oxide nodules that grew around a core in sediment; Yunnan pieces are collected for their sculptural, sometimes pyrite-bearing forms.
Yunnan is China's most mineralogically diverse province, source of the pyromorphite, azurite and blue aragonite that have become collector favourites.
The piece is cabinet in size, 9.8 × 8.6 × 7.8 cm (3.86 × 3.39 × 3.07 in) and 851 g (30.0 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
