この標本について
藤色と若草色が一つの結晶を分け合っています。上の縁には階段状の立方体面が低い城壁のように連なり、ガラス質でかすかに菫色を帯びています。その下では内部が緑に満たされ、成長がいったん止まってまた始まったところには乳白色の帯が雲のように混じります。窓の光にかざすと板全体が明るく灯り、13 cm 近い蛍石が一つの塊として浮かび上がります。
このような色の帯は、成長の途中で溶液の化学組成が移り変わった記録です。CaF2 の結晶格子に取り込まれた微量の不純物と欠陥が、吸収する光を菫色から緑へと振り替えていく間も、立方体は積み重なり続けました。浙江省の蛍石は開いた晶洞よりも重い単結晶の塊として産することが多く、表面が段状の立方体面と劈開面として読めるのはそのためです。モース硬度4で八面体方向に完全な劈開がありますので、この大きさの塊は必ず手を下に添えて運んでください。
寸法は 12.8 × 8.0 × 6.0 cm、947 g。割れた自然面を底にして自立し、台座は付属しません。写真の標本が、そのままお届けするものです。
