この標本について
サーモンピンクの菱マンガン鉱の菱面体が、飛び石のようにこの小さなプレートをジグザグに横切ります。どの結晶も砂糖のような白い皮膜をまとい、稜が丸みを帯びています。左上にある最も大きな一つだけは、下地のスイカのように深い色が透けて見えるほど澄んでいます。ほかは、載っている灰色の石英ドゥルーズを背に淡いバラ色として目に映ります。
菱マンガン鉱は炭酸マンガン MnCO3 で、あのピンクは微量の不純物ではなく、構造そのものに含まれるマンガンに由来します。モース硬度3.5〜4と柔らかく、三方向に完全な劈開があるため、落とした菱面体は欠けるのではなく平面に沿って割れます。右の縁に目を向けると、菫色の蛍石が一つドゥルーズのなかに育ち、その近くには真鍮色の硫化物の粒が散り、反対側の隅は暗色の鉱物の皮殻が押さえています。
プレートは 4.8 × 1.3 × 3.6 cm、35 g。薄く、切り出した一枚のように見えます。透明アクリルブロックに立てかけてあります。写真に写っているものが、そのまま棚を離れてお手元に向かいます。
