この標本について
墨を落としたように濃い青の結晶が、この小さな標本の中央にひしめき、結晶面の向きがそろったところで短く硬い光を返します。青が薄れるあたりからは鮮やかな草緑色のフェルトのような孔雀石が引き継ぎ、粗い茶黒色の鉄質母岩の上に斑となって広がります。母岩は全体が多孔質で、蜂の巣のように穴が抜けています。青い面を正面に向けて、透明のアクリル台に据えられています。
藍銅鉱と孔雀石は、一つの現象が見せる二つの顔です。どちらも二次的な銅の炭酸塩鉱物で、藍銅鉱はCu3(CO3)2(OH)2、孔雀石はCu2(CO3)(OH)2。酸素を含んだ水が銅の鉱体を下へ下へと浸してゆく場所で生まれ、藍銅鉱は水を取り込むにつれて、その青を孔雀石の緑へ譲り渡します。一つの標本に両方が乗っているということは、その置き換わりを途中で捉えたということです。硬さはどちらも高くなく、モース硬度3.5〜4ほど。日の差す窓辺よりも、乾いた間接光の下が向いています。
