この標本について
この内モンゴル産標本の立方体は、ビロードを通り越して黒と見えるほど紫が深く沈んでいます。ところが背後から光が入った途端、稜が菫色に灯り、内部では角ばったファントムの成長が幾段も浮かび上がります。その周りと下側を縁取るのは、淡いオリーブ黄色の球がつくる艶のない葡萄状の被膜で、暗い蛍石を前へ押し出して見せています。
ファントムが生まれるのは、成長が一度止まっている間に別の鉱物の薄い膜が結晶面に降り積もったり、単に溶液の性質が変わったりして、そのあとで成長が再開するからです。先に育った小さな立方体の輪郭は、大きな立方体の内側に封じられたまま残ります。黒に迫る濃さは CaF2 の結晶格子にできた色中心によるものです。蛍石はモース硬度4、八面体方向に完全な劈開をもちますので、持つときは角ではなく母岩の部分をつかんでください。
寸法は6.1 × 5.0 × 4.4 cm、重さは135 g。取り付けられている透明なアクリル台に載せたまま撮影しており、お届けするのはこの標本そのものです。
