この標本について
オートミールのような淡い灰色の粒が連なる低い土手から、ラベンダー色のぶどう状玉髄のひれが二枚立ち上がります。背の高い方は、風に押された尖塔のようにやや後ろへ傾いています。どの面も無数の小さな球でできており、紫が最も濃いところは艶やかに光り、色が灰色へ薄れるところはつや消しになります。二つの尾根の鞍部には、結晶質の白い筋が一本横切っています。
ぶどう瑪瑙は、ファセットを付けた結晶には真似のできない姿をした玉髄です。スラウェシ島の火山岩にできたガス孔のなかで、シリカが微細な繊維となって無数の核から放射状に析出しました。球の一つひとつがそれぞれ放射状のロゼットで、最も強い色は外側の皮に集まります。光が動くと紫が移ろって見えるのはそのためです。モース硬度6.5〜7とシリカ自体は硬いのですが、球は細い首の上に乗っています。埃を払うときは布ではなく柔らかい筆を使ってください。
寸法は 7.1 × 4.6 × 3.8 cm、重さは 55 g。写真のように、手のひらにすっぽり収まる大きさです。スタンドは付属しません。掲載写真は、この標本そのものを撮影したものです。
