この標本について
このインド産標本の土台は、真鍮色の黄鉄鉱が殻のように覆っています。その表面には油膜のような変色被膜が乗り、傾ける角度によって金から緑、ブロンズへと色が移ろいます。そこから伸びるのが無色の水晶で、長く形の整ったポイントが二本、後方へ反るように立ち上がり、その間に低いガラス質のドーム、両脇からは細い針状結晶の群れが扇のように広がっています。
黄鉄鉱（FeS2）の虹色は、誰かが後から加えたものではありません。結晶面にできたごく薄い酸化被膜が、シャボン玉と同じように白色光を分けているだけです。そしてこの膜こそが標本のいちばん繊細な部分で、拭いたり磨いたり、水で洗ったりすれば一瞬で失われます。乾いた状態を保ち、手入れは柔らかい筆だけにしてください。モース硬度7の水晶のほうは、特に気を遣う必要はありません。
