この標本について
無数の細い束沸石の刃状結晶が一点から放射し、桃クリーム色の球となって、下の灰色の玄武岩のくぼみを埋めています。針の先端は霜が降りたようにつや消しで、下がるにつれて刃は幅を増し、ガラス質になって、わずかに光を透かします。頂部の近くにはひときわ白く細かい結晶の一群があり、その下の気泡だらけの岩には蝋のような淡いレモン色の瘤が二つ張り付いています。
インドの玄武岩溶岩には古いガス孔が無数に残っていて、束沸石のような沸石はその泡の内側で、循環する溶液から結晶します。このような球は、空隙の壁の一点を核として成長が始まり、開いている方向すべてへ広がったときに生まれます。束沸石はモース硬度3.5〜4と軟らかく脆いので、乾いた場所に置き、埃は刷毛で払わずに吹き飛ばしてください。そうすれば、刃の先端は鋭いまま保たれます。
寸法は 5.1 × 2.5 × 3.8 cm、重量は 54 g。写真に写っている透明アクリル台にパテで据えてあります。ご覧いただいているものがそのままお届けする一点で、画像はすべてこの標本を写しています。
