この標本について

薄い板のほぼ全面を、一つの藍銅鉱サンが覆っています。中心は墨のように暗いウルトラマリンで、光の当たるところから矢車菊の青へと明るく変わります。表面はガラスではなくビロードです。微細な刃状結晶が無数に立ち上がり、絨毯の毛足のように並んでいます。青のなかを二、三か所、母岩の粘土が淡い島となって顔を出し、円盤に海岸線のような輪郭を与えています。

こうしたサンは、柔らかい粘土岩の層の間で藍銅鉱が結晶するときに生まれます。上へ伸びる余地がないため、放射する刃状結晶は横へ広がり、平らな円板になります。藍銅鉱は銅の炭酸塩鉱物 Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂ で、モース硬度は3.5〜4。淡い色の母岩はそれよりさらに柔らかい素材です。マルブンカのサンは決して水洗いせず、青い面にブラシを当てないでください。手入れは息を吹きかける程度がすべてで、直射日光も避けてください。

板は 2.8 × 2.8 cm、厚さ 1.3 cm、重さはわずか 10 g です。白いマウント用パテで透明アクリルブロックに留めてあります。掲載画像はいずれも、写真のとおりに据えたこの一点を撮影したものです。
